Methodology

Agency provenance, component tiers, and limits of composite grades for flood, wildfire, and earthquake exposure.

Canada Hazards publishes comparative municipal readings across three separate public layers: flood context, wildfire exposure from Natural Resources Canada's Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS), and seismic hazard from the national seismic hazard model used with the National Building Code of Canada (NBC). Coverage

The atlas tracks 172 municipalities. Each city page states the tier behind flood, wildfire, and earthquake components and rolls them into a browsing grade. Seismic PGA is the most consistently sourced national layer today; flood and wildfire ratings depend on provincial open data and CWFIS context and may remain pending or regional on some pages.

Earthquake (NRCan / NBC)

Geological Survey of Canada maintains catalogues, source models, and ground-motion models. Peak ground acceleration (PGA) and spectral accelerations support NBC design values, commonly at 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years on a reference site class. Values change when NRCan publishes a new model generation, not on an annual event score. The NBC Seismic Hazard Tool interpolates design values for a site.

Wildfire (CWFIS / CFFDRS)

Provincial and territorial agencies and NRCan compute Fire Weather Index (FWI) inputs from noon weather. CWFIS publishes national maps, hotspots, and perimeters. Landscape fire danger is distinct from whether a particular roof or deck meets FireSmart Canada wildland-urban interface guidance. Daily and seasonal layers move faster than city-page static grades.

Flood (fragmented mapping)

Regulatory and modeled inundation context is published by provinces and municipalities. Federal science support runs through NRCan's Flood Hazard Identification and Mapping Program. There is no single national parcel flood map. Pages use best available public comparative indicators and label tiers; they do not issue flood elevation certificates.

Composite grades

Grades compress unlike physical processes into one browsing aid so readers can choose which detailed layer to open next. They are not insurance underwriting decisions, parcel certificates, or evacuation orders. Overland flood and earthquake coverage on home policies are typically optional endorsements; availability and price are insurer decisions.

Using a city page

Open the flood, wildfire, and earthquake badges, then follow the layer that matches your lot: municipal flood maps for low ground, FireSmart and seasonal fire weather for tree-line homes, and NBC seismic values for design or retrofit questions. Use the composite grade only to decide which detail to read next; confirm insurance endorsements and current alerts for your address.

Limitations

Name the agency in each claim; do not blend FWI weather with PGA into one physical statement. Evacuation orders and emergency alerts override any comparative city grade.
