About Canada Hazards

Canada Hazards publishes municipal comparative readings for flood context, wildfire exposure drawn from Natural Resources Canada's Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS), and seismic hazard from the national seismic hazard model used with the National Building Code of Canada (NBC).

Three layers, three agencies

Wildfire weather and hotspots move on a daily/seasonal cadence through CWFIS and the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System. Seismic peak ground acceleration (PGA) and spectral accelerations come from NRCan Earthquakes Canada model generations that support NBC design values (commonly 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years on a reference site class). Flood mapping remains largely provincial and municipal, with federal support through the Flood Hazard Identification and Mapping Program. Household preparedness guidance also appears through Public Safety Canada (Get Prepared) and FireSmart Canada for wildland-urban interface practice.

Methodology notes

Each hazard layer has its own agency, resolution, and update cadence. City pages state the tier behind each component and roll them into a comparative grade for browsing, with links into flood, wildfire, and earthquake hubs for detail. Grades support comparison across municipalities. They are not parcel-level certificates, insurance underwriting decisions, or evacuation orders.
